Johnson’s breaker gives the Angels a fighting chance

Gilbert can miss bats; Seattle still has innings to solve
Logan Gilbert is listed to start for the Mariners on standard rest after consecutive double-digit-strikeout performances. His slider was still finishing hitters late in his latest outing, giving him a clear route through the Angels’ right-handed core.
The notebook gets messier once Gilbert leaves. Seattle’s bullpen recently lost a late lead despite cycling through several leverage arms, and Andrés Muñoz could not complete a five-out save attempt.
Matt Brash, the preferred bridge to Muñoz, has been shut down for the season by mlb.com because of continuing right-lat inflammation. That leaves Seattle asking more from a relief group carrying both mileage and some fresh scar tissue.
Cal Raleigh homered in the series opener, while Randy Arozarena remains Seattle’s strongest recent momentum source. The Mariners can also manufacture pressure with their legs, an important angle if Johnson allows traffic before settling into his delivery.
Night air helps the arms, but not all evening

Johnson does not need to outpitch Gilbert for this ticket to work; he needs to land the breaker, control Seattle’s running game and keep the score attached. If he does, the Angels can reach the innings where the Mariners are least trustworthy.
Gilbert may control most of the game, which is why the Angels moneyline asks too much. Taking +1.5 instead covers the likelier narrow-game script and protects against a one-run finish shaped by two uncertain late-inning groups.
The main threat is Gilbert working deep enough to bypass Seattle’s relief bridge. If his slider remains a put-away pitch and the Angels fail to force long counts, the Mariners can keep their weakest area out of sight.
