Bradley's splitter has the right target: Giants — Twins, September 22

The San Francisco Giants are auditioning hitters; the Minnesota Twins are bringing a starter equipped to expose them. In the cool air at Oracle Park, imperfect barrel contact tends to die an honest death.

Giants are asking prospects to carry the order

San Francisco has been eliminated and shifted deep into evaluation mode during its season-ending homestand. The Giants returned home after a sweep by the Dodgers in which bullpen damage, defensive mistakes and a shortage of sustained offense kept showing up in the notebook.

The lineup has lost much of its established middle. Rafael Devers is finished for the season after core-muscle surgery, Bryce Eldridge is on the concussion list and Jung Hoo Lee is out with a groin contusion, while mlb.com lists Marcelo Mayer’s activation among the latest roster changes.

Mayer gives the order a more polished plate appearance, and Victor Bericoto remains dangerous when a pitcher misses over the plate. Around them, however, San Francisco is relying heavily on inexperienced hitters who must recognize major-league spin and velocity before falling into chase counts.

Anthony Molina is listed to start for the Giants after receiving an extra day of rest. His upper-90s four-seamer, changeup and slider played well in a scoreless rebound outing at St. Louis, but the earlier short start against San Diego showed how quickly trouble arrives when hitters time the fastball.

Bradley has found more than extra velocity

Minnesota is also evaluating young players after elimination, but its recent offense has shown more connective tissue. Brooks Lee has set the table, while Josh Bell and Alan Roden supplied decisive contact during the Twins’ latest win in Anaheim.

Taj Bradley is the listed probable starter, working on standard rest after reaching a career-high workload this season. He has pitched deep in his last two outings, missing bats while keeping the ball in the yard more effectively.

The improvement is in the sequencing. Bradley can establish the high-velocity four-seamer, change the hitter’s eye line with a hard cutter and then bury a splitter with late drop; young hitters who identify velocity but not shape can look overmatched in a hurry.

That arsenal fits this opponent neatly. If the Giants chase the splitter below the zone, Bradley can keep his pitch count clean and reduce the innings handed to Minnesota’s less trustworthy middle relief.

Oracle Park takes the cheap homer off the board

First pitch is scheduled for 9:45 PM ET, shortly before sunset in San Francisco. Temperatures should begin in the low 60s and slide toward the upper 50s, with little rain risk and moderate wind generally tending toward left or left-center.

Oracle Park already asks hitters to earn their power, especially toward deep right-center and Triples Alley. Cool night air adds another layer of resistance, turning some elevated contact into warning-track outs or awkward gap plays rather than routine home runs.

This is the second game of a three-game series, and the opener’s bullpen usage was not verified at the research cutoff. That matters most for San Francisco after its planned opener, but Minnesota’s relief availability also deserves a final check before first pitch.

Bradley can keep the Giants below four

The cleanest angle is San Francisco’s team total rather than the full-game under. Molina’s volatility and a potentially worked Giants bullpen leave room for Minnesota to score, but those factors do not require the Giants’ depleted lineup to contribute much.

Bradley’s fastball-cutter-splitter mix attacks the central weakness of this order: limited experience reading quality secondary pitches. Recent length from the right-hander also lowers the chance that Minnesota must expose its softer relief layer before the late innings.

The park supplies insurance against mistakes in the air, and San Francisco is missing too many established bats to assume rallies will survive the bottom half of the order. Three runs still leave the ticket alive; asking this lineup to reach four against Bradley and Oracle’s night conditions is the tougher assignment.

Minnesota’s late-inning hierarchy is unsettled, and Game 1 usage was unavailable at the cutoff. A short Bradley start would increase exposure to a bullpen that has recently surrendered late leads.
