Coco Gauff and Sara Bejlek meet in the Cincinnati semifinal, a pairing with no shared history to lean on. Gauff is the clear favourite, and the market goes further than that: it asks her to win by five games or more. That is a specific demand, and this tournament has not given much evidence for it.
One week, two very different routes
Gauff has needed time in almost every match here. She dropped the opening set to Samsonova before resetting, went to a tiebreak in the second set against Li, and the double faults have kept arriving. The quarterfinal against Kostyuk was clean and quick, which reads as the exception rather than the pattern.
Bejlek has beaten Krejcikova, Alexandrova, Sabalenka and Keys in the same week. Why five games is one too many
The structural case for Gauff is sound: she defends well, covers the court and never has to force the neutral ball, which is precisely how Bejlek has been beating first-strike players all week. Winning is one thing; winning sterile is another. The risk is real — the Czech's quarterfinal ran close to three hours, and a tired set can vanish in twenty-five minutes.
Even so, 6-4 6-4 is enough here, and one set from Bejlek settles it outright.
